From Skeptics to Believers: How SEED’s Weekend of Code is Inspiring a New Tech Generation

This past weekend at SEED’s Weekend of Code was nothing short of transformative. In a room filled with curious freshers and beginners, we took a deep dive into the world of open source and version control systems, unraveling concepts that once felt intimidating but soon became exciting tools for innovation.

Starting with Skepticism

When we kicked off the session, many students had their doubts. What exactly is open source? Why does it matter? And more importantly, how does it relate to them as budding technologists? These were valid questions—and we were ready to answer them.

We began by exploring the philosophy behind open source, shedding light on its role in shaping the tech world. Using examples like Linux and GitHub, we demonstrated how open source isn’t just about free software; it’s about creating something bigger than ourselves—a global community working together to push boundaries.

Getting Hands-On

Theory is great, but nothing beats rolling up your sleeves and diving into the work. Our first practical session focused on Linux and bash commands. For many students, this was their first time using a terminal, and it was fascinating to watch their hesitation turn into confidence.

By the time we moved on to creating directories, navigating file systems, and managing permissions, the room was buzzing with excitement. The terminal was no longer a black screen of mystery; it was a tool they could command with precision.

Next, we introduced Git and version control—a game-changer for collaboration in tech. Students worked on a mini-project, learning how to track changes, create branches, and commit their progress. The grand finale? Pushing their project to GitHub, where their work became part of the open-source ecosystem.

A Shift in Perspective

What stood out the most was the shift in mindset. At the start of the day, open source felt like an abstract concept. But by the end, students were fully invested, realizing how open source drives innovation and collaboration.

“I didn’t know open source was this impactful,” one student shared, while another chimed in, “This experience has opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.”

Building Skills and Community

Beyond the technical skills, this weekend was about more than just learning—it was about community. Students worked together, solving problems, sharing ideas, and celebrating wins. It was inspiring to see the camaraderie and collaboration in the room.
